THE FIRST OFFICIAL JOE ZAWINUL BIOGRAPHY PUBLISHED IN GERMAN LANGUAGE

We thank Mrs. Ingrid Fuehrer of Residenz Verlag, who sent us information about a new book, the first official Joe Zawinul biography, that has been published only in German language at this moment.
We publish also some additional information, please check the
official Residenz Verlag website for more details and if you want to buy the book.

Gunther Baumann, Joe Zawinul. A biography
240 pp, numerous colour illustrations, bound
Residenz Verlag

The book

The British journalist Brian Glasser has called Joe Zawinul "the most important European in the history of jazz". On 7 July 2002, the Viennese pianist, composer and band-leader, who has lived since 1959 in the USA, celebrates his 70th birthday - an ideal occasion to review his life and his great career. This book is based on the various stages of Zawinul's development. His childhood in the Vienna of dictatorship and World War II. His decision to turn his talent as a pianist to jazz rather than to classical music. His first successes in Austria with Fatty George and with the Austrian All Stars. Then his spectacular career in the USA: at 27, having entered the country on a student visa, he played his way into the top league of American jazz within only a few weeks. In the 1960s, Zawinul was pianist in the most successful jazz ensemble of the time, the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, for whom he wrote the world-hit Mercy, Mercy. He was engaged by the great Miles Davis for epoch-making albums such as Bitches Brew. The legendary group "Weather Report" started in 1970, and continued for 15 years to set new standards.

Zawinul is not only a music-maker but also a gifted speaker. For this reason, the book is conceived as a dialogue. The chapters follow no strict pattern, but are multi-layered. Thus this richly illustrated volume shows not only Zawinul as the world sees him, but rather Zawinul as he sees the world. An artist's portrait, then, as has never before been written in the field of jazz.

The author

Gunther Baumann was born in Cologne in 1952 and has lived in Vienna since 1968. He began his career as a journalist in Vienna in 1970, with the Viennese newspaper Die Presse. In 1979 he founded the music & hi-fi magazine VOX, of which the first title story was devoted to Joe Zawinul and his band "Weather Report". Since 1982, Baumann has been critic and arts editor of the Kurier newspaper.

NEWS ABOUT THE LONG-WAITED WEATHER REPORT UNISSUED RECORDING FROM SONY
Thanks to: Anil Prasad

Our friend Anil Prasad sent us some news about the new Weather Report CD set. This is the text of the message he sent us:
Hal Miller, the gentleman penning the liner notes for the forthcoming U.S. Weather Report reissues, recently got in touch with me. It appears things are on the move with Sony USA. Here's what he had to say:
There will be Sony Legacy re-releases of "Mysterious Traveler","Tale Spinnin'",& "Black Market" this spring. In addition, a "best of Weather Report" will be released. None of these contain any new material just improved mixes. Negotiations with Joe Zawinul are on process right now and will probably result in a box set of previously unreleased studio as well as live concert recordings. In the last week, Joe Z. has come up with a batch of excellent Jaco-era tapes and there is now some discussion about a special Jaco w/Weather Report release in addition to the other stuff planned. 2002 will be a bonanza year for Weather Report fans. Good news indeed.

KARIM ZIAD RELEASED A SOLO ALBUM
Thanks to: Pierre Tassone

Karim Ziad, the algerian drummer who was part of the Zawinul Syndicate has a brand new release of his own thing. The album is called "Ifrikya" and released by the german label ACT. This is (again) an attempt to seduce us non african with a warm and boiling multiethnic music and at the same time a call (again ?) for all africans to stand together. A sharp comment of his: "Even if I'm white I am an African. I'm a Berber and my whiteness comes from Africa, not Europe". This splendid record has many people featured and here is part of the appearing guests. Alain Debiossat (sax) and the martiniquan bassist Michel Alibo, both from Sixun. Nguyên Lê, the francovietnamese guitarist from Ultramarine. The bosnian pianist Bojan Zulfikarpasic, here also presenting one of his tunes. The blind french keyboardist Jean-Philippe Rykiel who has among others worked a lot with the malian griot Salif Keita (remember his album produced by Z ?). A young bass player from Mauritius islands. Some gnaoua musicians on typical instruments like the gumbri but also as singers. Karim Ziad plays of course the drums but also percussion, guitar and as lead vocalist on 4 tracks. Total playing time is 51:10.
Since Music By Mail (my mail order) is distributing ACT products you are more than welcome to
contact me privately if interested. ACT records are attractively priced. And the music is great !
Karim Ziad was previously guesting on Nguyên Lê's album "Maghreb & Friends" (ACT 9261-2). This time he returned the politeness by inviting the guitarist.

February 27, 2001
INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEW ZAWINUL SYNDICATE BASSPLAYER
Thanks to: Pierre Tassone

We want to thank our friend Pierre Tassone who sent us more info about the new bassplayer of the Zawinul Syndicate for the next European Tour.
His name is Etienne M'Bappé and he's from Cameroun. He played with the "Ultramarine", a fusion/world music band that released 3 records: Ultramarine (1985), Dé (1989) and E Si Mala (1991). Etienne Mbappé was also playing in the ONJ (the stately financed jazz big band Orchestre National De Jazz) in 1989. He has been featured as a sideman in many bands including some of Jean-Pierre Como's recordings. Ultramarine was an incredible ethnic/fusion band featuring an african rhythm section. The drummer Mokhtar Samba has played with the Zawinul Syndicate at some time or did some replacements. But Ultramarine also called for a fantastic pianist/composer from the Antilles: Mario Canonge. And should it not be enough their guitarist is the now well known franco-vietnamese musician Nguyên Lê (a lot of records on german ACT label). Only the sax player Pierre-Olivier Govin is french ! Such a multicultural reunion produced an extremely varied music. The other thing to say is that another band was at the same time (mid 80's) using the same receipt and perhaps got a better exposure and success. This band was (or still is) Sixun. Led by keyboardist Jean-Pierre Como and featuring real good musicians like guitarist Louis Winsberg or saxophonist Alain Debiossat this band was like Ultramarine driven by a fantastic and powerful rhythm section with cultural african roots: Michel Alibo on bass and of course Paco Sery on drums. Jean-Pierre Como produced also 2-3 solo albums and so did Winsberg. Como never hided that Weather Report and especially Joe Zawinul was a major influence on their music and you can hear it in the music too. Sixun put up 5 or 6 records to this date. Both groups are highly recommanded and I would draw your attention on the following. Ultramarine has a stronger ethnic background than Sixun. Sixun basically uses the african rhythms in the music as a strong rhythm impact but Ultramarine integrates the ethnic elements in the compositional structure + the rhythmic section. And those are Africa, Antilles, Asia: a very rich scope indeed. Sixun is closer to a western approach of music only integrating ethnic elements as a driving force.
A curiosity: this guy plays with gloves!! (See the photo above, by
jazzvalley.com).
The following is the composition of these bands:

Ultramarine:

Etienne Mbappé: Cameroun
Mokhtar Samba: Morocco and Senegal
Nguyên Lê: Franco-Vietnamese
Pierre-Olivier Govin: French
Mario Canonge: Martinique
Bago: Antilles

Sixun:

Jean-Pierre Como: France
Alain Debiossat: France
Louis Winsberg: France
Michel Alibo: Antilles
Paco Sery: Ivory Coast (and called by many The pygmean drummer)
Jaco Largent & Frank Arnaud: probably Antilles

SYNOPSIS

Joe Zawinul is acknowledged as the only European to transform the face of jazz.
He pioneered the incorporation of international rhythms and new electronic tonalities into a music form, loosely known as fusion and is even credited with inventing the hip-hop beat.
Born in 1933, son of an Austrian peasant, Zawinul ploughed fields with oxen until he discovered jazz, age 11. By the time he was 30 he had worked with heroes like Ben Webster and Dinah Washington, and was composing and playing piano for one of the most popular outfits in the US, the Cannonball Adderley group.
In 1969 he played a crucial role in one of Miles Davis's most controversial changes of musical direction, composing the title track to Miles' album - In A Silent Way.
In 1970 he left Miles to join sax genius Wayne Shorter and form Weather Report, a band which sold in excess of 6 million records world wide, had a major pop hit with 'Birdland' and topped the jazz polls for 16 years.
This, the first biography of Joe, is published at the height of his career. A creative genius, artistically free with a rare vision and a man of remarkable humanitarianism (he is Austrian ambassador to sixteen African countries), even people with only a passing interest in jazz will find his life story fascinating.

AUTHOR NOTES

London based Brian Glasser is an experienced jazz writer and journalist who has contributed to Time Out, The Guardian, The Independent, The European, Q, Mojo and many major jazz magazines. Brian has interviewed Joe extensively over the years, gaining remarkable insight into the man's life and music..

JOE ZAWINUL'S TOUR IN AUSTRIA

We want to thank our great friend Thomas Kober, who sent us a brief report of the Zawinul's concert in Worgl, Austria, June 27:

I've attended yesterday's concert of the Zawinul Syndicate and I don't know what to think about it yet. This, of course is not a review, just a tiny story about that show.
Location: Wörgl/Tyrol/Austria, 27th of june 2000
Lineup: Amit Chatterjee, guit (who was with the Syndicate some years ago before); Nathaniel Townsley III, dr; Victor Bailey, b; Manolo Badrena, perc; Josef Zawinul, keyb.
The band started over half an hour late, Victor Bailey entered the stage on crutches and was playing sitting on a chair for the whole two sets, cool that he played even though! Some moments I enjoyed (they put a smile on my face), when they played Fast city, Continuum, quotes from doctor honoris causa, Scarlet woman, Badia. Do I live in the past? Maybe.
In regards to the sound, all I can say is that Badrena could hardly be heard most of the show while Zawinul was pretty loud.
Like I said before, I don't know what to think about the concert. The audience was sitting on chairs like the famous guys at Madame Tussaud's. Nobody was moving. Let's say it didn't really happen, in my opinion - other Tyroleans might not share my opinion. After the show I purchased the "Two years with the Syndicate" video and was quite surprised when I found out that it was Anthony Zawinul selling me the tape. Anthony is a very friendly person by the way, he even let me go backstage to have two LPs signed (are these LPs going to be eBay items? - NO! I felt very uncomfortable to go backstage). It was nice to see Z drinking Schnaps.
Greetings from Austria,
Thomas.

Greetings from Austria,
Thomas.
